1. The Problem: The Spectator’s Silence (200 words)

In the contemporary landscape of live performance, the audience remains largely a monolithic observer—a passive recipient of sensory information. Despite the rapid advancement of immersive technologies, the fundamental power dynamic of the stage has changed little since the 19th century: the performer broadcasts, and the spectator consumes. This “passive spectator” model represents a lost opportunity for true collective intelligence and emotional resonance. While modern interactive art has attempted to bridge this gap through simple sensor-based triggers or binary voting systems, these interventions often feel like gimmicks rather than integral compositional elements. They lack the nuance required for high-art expression and the computational robustness to scale to large-scale performances. The problem is one of compositional agency. Without a framework that allows the audience to influence the aesthetic trajectory of a performance in a way that respects the artist’s authority, interactive art will remain a novelty. We must move beyond simple interaction and toward computational co-creation, where the audience’s collective will is treated as a high-resolution compositional parameter, equivalent in value to the notes on a score or the movements in a choreography.

2. The Solution: Omni-Dromenon Machina (350 words)

Omni-Dromenon Machina (ODM) is a robust, real-time computational engine designed to transform audience interaction into a weighted consensus mechanism. At its core, the system utilizes a proprietary Weighted Consensus Algorithm (WCA) that aggregates thousands of discrete inputs from mobile devices and translates them into a single, high-fidelity control signal. Unlike traditional voting systems, ODM employs a multi-layered weighting strategy:

The architecture is built for extreme performance. Developed in Node.js and TypeScript, the Core Engine handles WebSocket concurrency with ease, while the Performance SDK provides React-based components for rapid interface development. The system is inherently genre-agnostic; whether it is controlling the grain-size of a granular synthesizer in a musical POC or the brightness of a volumetric light field in an XR environment, the logic remains the same. By leveraging Cloud Run and Redis on Google Cloud Platform, ODM scales horizontally, supporting audiences ranging from intimate chamber groups to stadium-sized crowds. This is not just a tool; it is a “stage that breathes,” a digital ecosystem where the boundaries between creator and observer are blurred by the speed of computation.

3. Impact: Toward a Reciprocal Aesthetics (300 words)

The impact of Omni-Dromenon Machina lies in its ability to redefine the social contract of performance. By providing audiences with genuine agency, we catalyze a cultural shift from consumption to co-production. Drawing on Bourriaud’s “Relational Aesthetics” and Rancière’s “Emancipated Spectator,” ODM provides the technical infrastructure for a truly democratic artistic experience.

For the artist, the system offers a new vocabulary. No longer confined to static scores, performers can engage in a live dialogue with their audience’s collective mood. For the audience, the impact is one of deep investment; the performance becomes a reflection of their internal states, scaled to a monumental size. In the context of the Mozarteum XR Residency, this allows for the exploration of “Social XR”—virtual spaces where the collective physics of the crowd dictates the reality of the environment. The result is a reciprocal creation, a feedback loop where the artist responds to the audience, and the audience responds to the artist’s response. This synergy produces a unique aesthetic tension that is impossible to replicate in traditional media, marking a significant step forward in the evolution of media art.

The primary risks for ODM involve network infrastructure and user adoption. High-density WiFi environments can introduce latency spikes that disrupt the consensus loop. To mitigate this, we have optimized our WebSocket payload sizes and implemented a local Nginx reverse proxy to handle traffic bursts. Furthermore, if network conditions degrade, the system gracefully falls back to “Performer Lock” mode, ensuring the show continues uninterrupted.

Regarding adoption, the “barrier to entry” for participants (scanning a QR code) can be a friction point. Our mitigation strategy involves building the Audience Interface as a lightweight Progressive Web App (PWA), requiring zero installation and loading in under 1.5 seconds. Finally, to address the risk of “input flooding” (griefing), the engine includes an intelligent rate-limiting layer that detects and deprioritizes malicious actors, maintaining the integrity of the collective consensus.
