Artistic Purpose

The most common failure mode in creative technology is the inability to articulate why the work matters. The technical achievement is often extraordinary — novel algorithms, real-time systems handling hundreds of simultaneous inputs, machine learning models trained on bespoke datasets, multi-sensory installations that respond to audience presence in sophisticated ways. But when the grant application asks “What is the artistic significance of this work?” or when the residency committee wants to understand “How does this project advance your practice?”, the answers are often thin. The technical documentation is impeccable. The artistic documentation is an afterthought.

This is not because the artists lack intellectual depth. It is because the tools for documenting artistic methodology in computational practice are underdeveloped. The studio art world has a rich tradition of process documentation: sketchbooks, studio visits, artist talks, catalogue essays, MFA thesis exhibitions with written components. The software engineering world has its own documentation traditions: architecture decision records, design documents, postmortems, sprint retrospectives. But creative technologists exist at the intersection of these worlds, and neither tradition’s documentation methods fully serve their practice. A sketchbook does not capture the iterative refinement of an algorithm. An architecture decision record does not capture the aesthetic motivation behind a technical choice.

Case Studies & Methodology fills this gap. It provides a structured format for documenting the full arc of a creative-technical project: from the initial concept (what question is the work asking?), through the prototyping phase (what was tried, what failed, what was learned?), to the exhibition or deployment (how did audiences or users respond?), and finally to the reflection (what does this work mean in the context of the larger practice, and what does it open up for future work?). Each case study is a self-contained document that can be included in a grant application, submitted to a peer-reviewed conference, cited in an academic CV, or read by a collaborator who wants to understand the thinking behind a specific piece.

The format is deliberately structured — not as a template to be filled in mechanically, but as a scaffold that ensures the important questions are addressed. Every case study answers: What was the artistic question? What were the technical constraints? What methodological choices were made, and why? What precedents were consulted? What was the outcome? What was learned? These questions are the minimum standard for intellectual rigor in a creative practice, and having them answered consistently across a body of work is what distinguishes a practice with depth from a portfolio of disconnected projects.

The Case Study as Creative Artifact

A case study in this system is not a dry report. It is a piece of writing that takes the creative process seriously as intellectual work. The tone is reflective but precise — the voice of an artist who has thought carefully about why they made the choices they made and can articulate those reasons with clarity. This voice is essential for the institutional contexts where case studies are most valuable: grant applications, academic publications, residency proposals, and artist talks.

The format draws on three traditions simultaneously. From academic research, it borrows the emphasis on methodology — explicit description of the methods used, the alternatives considered, and the reasons for the choices made. From design practice, it borrows the case study format itself — a narrative account of a specific project that illustrates broader principles. From artistic practice, it borrows the emphasis on reflection — honest assessment of what worked, what did not, and what the outcome means for the practice as a whole.

Methodology as Evidence

For creative practitioners applying for institutional support — grants, residencies, academic positions, commissions — the single most important thing to demonstrate is that the practice is methodologically rigorous. Funders want to know that the artist has a process, that the process produces results, and that the artist can articulate what makes their approach distinctive. A portfolio shows that the artist makes interesting work. A body of case studies shows how and why they make it. The latter is far more compelling to selection committees, because it provides evidence that the artist will continue to produce significant work — not just that they have done so in the past.

This repository is designed to produce that evidence systematically. Instead of writing methodology narratives from scratch for each application (a common and exhausting practice), the artist builds a library of case studies over time. Each new grant application can draw on relevant case studies, selecting and adapting them for the specific funder’s priorities. The case study library becomes an intellectual asset — a growing body of documented methodology that deepens with each new project.

Comparative Methodology

Each case study includes a section comparing the methodology used with established approaches in the field. This is not an academic literature review — it is a practical positioning of the work relative to recognized practitioners and research groups. For interactive installation work, the comparisons might reference Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s participatory installations, TeamLab’s immersive environments, or Random International’s rain room technologies. For generative music, the comparisons might reference Brian Eno’s generative composition methods, Autechre’s algorithmic live sets, or George Lewis’s interactive improvisation systems. For AI-human collaboration, the references might include Memo Akten’s learning systems, Mario Klingemann’s neural art practice, or Holly Herndon’s vocal AI collaborations.

These comparisons serve two purposes. They demonstrate that the artist is aware of the field’s major figures and research trajectories — a baseline expectation for any serious grant application. And they articulate what is distinctive about this practice’s approach — the specific contribution it makes to the conversation. A case study that can clearly state “Unlike Lozano-Hemmer’s binary participation model, our consensus algorithm supports continuous multi-parameter input with spatial weighting” provides exactly the kind of differentiation that makes a grant application compelling.

Instead, it documents the research-through-practice process: how artistic decisions generated new knowledge, how technical experiments produced aesthetic insights, and how the iterative cycle of making and reflecting advanced both the work and the understanding of the practice.

This distinguishes the case studies from both standard artist statements (which tend toward post-hoc narrative) and standard technical documentation (which tends toward procedural description). A case study in this system captures the messy, non-linear, insight-generating process of creative-technical work, while organizing it into a structure that institutional readers can navigate.

Reflective Practice

Each case study concludes with a reflection section that implements Donald Schon’s concept of “reflection-on-action” — the practitioner stepping back from the work to articulate what was learned. The reflection addresses three questions: What did this work reveal about the practice’s methods? What would be done differently with the benefit of hindsight? What new questions does this work open for future projects? These reflections accumulate over time into a record of methodological evolution — visible evidence that the practice learns from its own history and advances with each new project.
